Abstract

BIZ4GREEN is a collaborative research project supporting energy-intensive industries in their transition towards a climate-neutral economy. At its core is the concept of a green digital twin, enabling product-specific life cycle assessments and CO₂ transparency by linking production data with environmental impact. Within this framework, the project combines digital twin technologies with sustainable business models to enable data-driven optimization and unlock new value creation opportunities.

Description

Rising energy and carbon costs are placing increasing pressure on European industry to innovate and transform. In particular, energy-intensive manufacturers face the challenge of remaining competitive while meeting growing sustainability requirements. At the same time, a lack of transparency regarding product-specific environmental impacts makes targeted optimization and sustainable value creation difficult.

BIZ4GREEN addresses this challenge by introducing the concept of a green digital twin. This digital representation links production technologies with process parameters and makes their impact on the CO₂ footprint visible at the product level. Unlike existing approaches, it enables companies to analyze and actively optimize the ecological impact of production on individual products.

Building on this, the project focuses on developing digital business models that integrate carbon footprinting into value creation processes. By enabling the monetization of sustainability data and supporting CO₂-certified products, companies can optimize production, create additional customer value, and develop new revenue streams, establishing a scalable blueprint for the transformation of energy-intensive industries.

Role of gemineers in BIZ4GREEN

Within the project, gemineers contributes its expertise in data acquisition, processing, and storage, supporting the development and prototypical implementation of green digital twin approaches for industrial processes such as milling and inductive case hardening in collaboration with project partners.

Summary

BIZ4GREEN lays the foundation for sustainable and competitive manufacturing in energy-intensive industries by combining green digital twins with data-driven business models. The project enables companies to make CO₂ emissions transparent, optimize production processes, and unlock new value creation opportunities through sustainable products and services.
